Planning your events schedule can get surprisingly complicated. However, it doesn’t have to be.
It can be tricky to bring in engaging events for an office full of people, with varying tastes and various jobs. You’ve also got to mediate between management
That’s the hard part.
But here’s the good news:
You get to make your office happy! Out of everyone in the office, YOU have the most influence over office culture. You get to bring new energy into the office. Enjoy yourself!
Learn from 2017. Ask yourself:
Now’s the time for reflection. Don’t shy from criticism! And feel free to ask your coworkers for their perspectives as well. Ask the whole office to submit one thing they appreciate about the workplace, and one thing that needs improvement.
What do you want to accomplish in 2018? Ask:
Get excited! This is the time to think big.
Use what you’ve learned from 2017 to create your 2018 goals. For instance, if there’s disconnect between employees, focus on team-building workshops. If there high levels of stress in the office, blow off some steam by bringing in some great performers. Or if there’s a heavy, repetitive workload, pique your coworkers’ interest by holding an interesting lecture series.
Ok, so you’ve determined your goals. Now it’s time for the nitty gritty.
Determine your budget.
You don’t want to be stuck borrowing money from other lines in the budget because you didn’t plan ahead.
This is the time to advocate for your co-workers. Prioritize employee engagement! Your people are the soul of the office, so office culture shouldn’t be an afterthought.
Office culture pays for itself
Still need convincing? By investing in office culture, you’ll reduce employee turnover and improve productivity. When you engage your employees, they’ll want to perform well in the workplace.
You know your goals, you know your budget. Now comes the fun part! You get to choose events!
The two most important factors to pay attention to are: event frequency and type.
How often do you want to hold events? Monthly? Bimonthly? This should be highly structured. When your events schedule is consistent (say, the first Thursday of each month), you give your office a date to look forward to. It’s also much easier for your coworkers to schedule out their calendar and make time to come to your event!
What type of events do you want to hold? Well, that depends on your goals. Here’s a list of popular types of office events:
Most popular types of office events:
Here are a few examples of how to structure your events, now that you know what types of events you’d like to hold:
Example events programs
Idea #1: Stick to one theme.
Put on a workshop series, or a team-building series, or a wellness series.
Idea #2: Choose a main theme, and a secondary theme.
You could do monthly wellness events, with a quarterly team-building workshop. Or perhaps weekly happy hours and a monthly ‘surprise and delight’ event!

Idea #3: Speaker series.
Bring in a number of speakers who address a common theme (such as professional skills), or switch it up by introducing a new topic each time!

If you still aren’t sure what will “click” with your office, try out a hodgepodge of events. You don’t have to finalize the whole year right now. You can use your first quarter to figure out what your office responds to, and use what you learn to plan the rest of the year.
